The first book in this series, "Winter's Wrath," followed a small band of Palatines as they fled their German homes, devastated by the unending wars with the French and the brutal winter of 1708-09, to make their way up the Rhine to Amsterdam.
This second book of this series follows them from The Netherlands over the North Sea to a prolonged stay in London as the government and church leaders tried to deal with their growing thousands seeking passage and land in Queen Anne's New World colonies.
From a direct descendant of these Palatine immigrants comes a well-crafted telling of danger, adventure, good humor and the resilience of the human spirit. The true story of this incredible migration weaves history and fiction into a compelling narrative.

What makes Charity's Chains different, and of interest to me, is that it takes an historic event, the mass migration of thousands of inhabitants of the Rhine Valley in 1709 - 1710, and puts the reader in their shoes. This is not historical fiction based on privileged characters, but on the ordinary folks who left their homes as war, religious persecution, and famine made flight the most realistic option. I am a researcher working on this historical period, this event, these people, and for me this is the sort of story which matters. It reminds us who we are as a people, the descendants of refugees, victims of prejudice, economic bad luck, and rulers who cared more for power than justice. I also enjoyed encountering women, men, and children who did what they could to survive and to support one another and their community.Product details

Charity Chains The Palatine Journey Part Two edition by Kay Gilmour Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
As a descendant of the 1708 Palatines (Michael Weigand) I am most interested in these books. While I enjoyed the first in the series, her characters really came to life in this book. I am eagerly awaiting her third book in the series
Gilmour does an absolutely wonderful job of bringing history to life. The characters in her trilogy are well defined and describe the travails that created a great imigration of German's to the "new world.". Once started, it's hard to put the second installment down, and then hoping the final volume will be available soon. Wharever you do make sure you read Winter's Wrath first (the first of the trilogies).
As a descendant, this was exactly what I was looking for to gain an appreciation of the Palatine story. Fine engaging writing. I hope to see volume Three soon. Thank you.
"Charity's Chains" continues with an easy transition to the journey which began in "Winter's Wrath". There is so much to learn as the reader discovers an important part of the journey thousands took to find a new home in America. Personally, this was a storehouse of information about history I had not previously discovered. Being an avid reader and being selective of historical fiction selections, learning about the past is the bonus. The author has my attention, and I am looking forward to the next installment.
Very well written. Must have done a LOT of research on a rarely mentioned period of history, except by those descended from these folks. Had a couple of twists I hadn't expected, reminding me that people are people. There are good ones and bad ones and just plain evil ones plus all shades in between.
Her descriptions of the environment/cities of the period & the living conditions were well done. Interesting way she wove in a famous figure who helped these poor immigrants out. Gave me quite an appreciation for all that my ancestors went through to get to a new life in the 'New World'.
