The early nineteen seventies both in the United States and in Italy were years of protest, against the war in Vietnam and against discrimination of all kinds,especially racial and gender related. Cary Lawson has returned home after three years in Italy to find herself at a crossroads. She is a changed person - living in another culture and speaking another language have made her more open and understanding of others, but she has to struggle with her own feelings as she tries to accept what happened in Italy and start over again. After her return to Genoa she meets a medical student and the choices she makes will have repercussions on her relationship and determine if she will finally succeed in putting the past behind her.

Moorings is a short easy read about Cary Lawson, a young woman with divided loyalties... to an old love or a new one... to her American homeland, or the Italy that feels more like home... to living in the past, or moving on with her life.One of the strengths of this novel is its backdrop of the similarly conflicted tenor of the times - early nineteen seventies - when in the US...
--the music of the times was reflecting a dissonance between the philosophies of different generations, with Bob Dylan singing "...your sons and your daughters are beyond your command...";
--protests were rampant against... take your pick: political machines, the military-industrial complex, racial bigotry and many others;
--the war in Vietnam was winding down, but Watergate hadn't happened yet.
And in Italy during that same period, there were similar though not identical social convulsions...
--women militating for equality in the workplace, and for pro-choice in the abortion debate;
--various terrorist groups sowing physical and political chaos;
--anti-US protests for real or perceived interference with the affairs of other countries.
The novel neatly wraps the unsettled times of both countries around someone who is American but loves Italy. With both countries having a strong pull on her for different reasons, Cary Lawson struggles to decide where she really should be. Relationships on both sides of the Atlantic play into the struggle, enhancing an underlying theme of the story: the always-discomfiting question of, `where do I belong', or `what do I call home'? And Cary herself is just as unsettled as the times -- the decision to move from friendship into love is as fraught with uncertainty as the upended cultures she's trying to navigate.
For readers who favor the kiss-kiss-bang-bang kind of story, this isn't it. But for those who want some educational background -- or accurate reminiscence -- of those troublesome times, told through the memories and emotions of a young woman who actually experienced them, you should enjoy this short novel.
